Saving myself from becoming a library book thief

This is one of those books I have to own. I'd checked it out of my college library and found before I was more than a few pages into it that I wanted to highlight great quotes and food for thought. So I bought highlighting tape so I wouldn't get nabbed for highlighting a library book but would be able to find them quickly again for a research paper I'm writing.

All well and good, but within a few pages I'd found such good points and quotes I want to preserve to refer back to, that I'm ordering it. Otherwise I can tell I'm going to have trouble returning this book to the library - at all. They frown on that - and it might keep me from registering for classes next semester. Better to spring for the price now and avoid those fines and guilt.

When U.S. citizens were urged to "buy American" in the early 1930s in order to boost the national economy, African American thinkers such as Robert Abbott were quick to point out the irony: "Certainly we'll buy America first," he wrote, and went on to list the many products he'd now be buying--like steak dinner in a restaurant and theater tickets--which he had never been allowed to buy because of segregation laws. Not all Americans were as savvy as Abbott, however, and a tradition of "economic nationalism" that excluded from free trade almost as many within the borders of the United States as it did without enjoyed some success in those years, as it had in the years leading up to the American Revolution. Post-segregation, "Buy American" has become, among other things, an empty slogan for businesses who wish to appeal to patriotic sensibilities (like Wal-Mart, which just happens to also have "Buy Canadian" and "Buy Mexican" campaigns for its stores in those countries). In Buy American, Dana Frank advocates a "celebration" of the democratic ideal of such economic movements while refocusing the idea of "protectionism" to boost not simply corporate profits but the global interests of working people. The call to buy American-made products and protect U.S. jobs is nearly as old as the nation, dating back to the Boston Tea Party. Frank explores the historical and political context of the occasional "import panic attack(s)" that hit the country. In a chapter examining alternatives to "Buy Americanism," Frank focuses on internal racial issues and how they affect worker perspectives. In the 1930s Americans of African and Chinese descent wanted to embrace their international ties, not indulge in xenophobic economic policies. Black newspapers scorned the patriotism implied by the buy-American movement at a time when racial segregation was rampant. Frank also examines how unions have used the rallying cry to leverage larger salaries for workers, sometimes coming dangerously close to blaming overseas workers for U.S. economic woes. Even large corporations, including Wal-Mart, have sponsored the movement when it suited their purposes, to hold onto market share. Most all of the programs still apply - the laws of physics and engineering have not changed. Have often thought that reproducing these as spreadsheets would be a nice "second edition." Daryanani knew his stuff, and was a great engineer.

Leah Gallo is an author, photographer, and book editor who has worked closely with filmmaker Tim Burton since 2007. She wrote and edited the award-winning tome The Art of Tim Burton and Big Eyes:The Film, The Art. Holly C. Kempf is a graphic designer and book editor who has been working with director Tim Burton since 2007. She designed and edited the comprehensive and award-winning The Art of Tim Burton, as well as Frankenweenie: The Visual Companion, The Nightmare Before Christmas: 20th Anniversary Edition, and others.

I bought this for my Adult daughter who is a huge Miss. Peregrine's book series lover!
She's a huge Tim Burton fan as well and as soon as she found out about this new Hardcover book chronicles every step in the making of the film—from script development and casting to concept art, set design, costumes, visual effects, etc...She messaged me the link and said She NEEDED this book!!
Little did she know, I went right online and ordered it, so this morning when UPS came she was shocked when she opened the box!
Filled with exclusive interviews, on-set photography, and special introductions by Tim Burton and Ransom Riggs, this deluxe hardcover volume is a terrific gift for peculiars of all ages!
I have also read the Miss.Peregrine's book series and we both are really looking forward to the movie coming out in the next month or so.
The book is well written and illustrated. She's a Hardcover only girl, so she's in love!

An incredible array of photographs and accompanying text. Thoughtfully curated and meticulously detailed. A must have for any Burton collector, photo fiend, and movie buff. It's a richly colorful, beautifully printed and bound book, at home on any coffee table or private collection.
