About the Author

F.S. Hill Jr. is a Professor Emeritus of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.  He received a Ph. D. degree from Yale University in 1968, worked for 3 years in digital data transmission at Bell Telephone Laboratories, and joined the University in 1970.  He is the author of numerous articles in the field of signal processing, communications, and computer graphics.  He has been editor and associate editor of the IEEE Communications Society magazine.  He is also a fellow of the IEEE.  He is co-author of the book Introduction To Engineering and has won several awards for outstanding teaching.

 

Stephen M. Kelley and Dr. Hill met in 2000 in connection with a National Science Foundation distance learning project.  Since then co-teaching courses in computer graphics at the University of Massachusetts and co-authoring Computer Graphics using OpenGL, 3rd Edition.  Stephen Kelley recently graduated from the University of Massachusetts with a degree in Interactive Multimedia and Computer Graphics along with a minor in Information Technology.  Stephen also runs his own web development and consulting company, Intangible Inc.

Do not get the new version

I'm taking a computer graphics class and this book is used. I bought the new version, the paperback edition. Apart from being completely black and white including the so called color pictures, it's made with very cheap paper and grainy text. It may not look pretty and I could have done with that but it's also missing pages, on page 383 to the next page, it jumps to page 388, and that is simply unacceptable. It's a risk we take when we order online and can't see the merchandise beforehand but after years of ordering through Amazon, this is the first time I've received such a low quality product that is downright incomplete.

The two stars is because even with typos and grammatical errors the book's contents are good. It goes through the basics of computer graphics all the way through ray-tracing. It does so with many example programs which I thought was nice. The source of the programs is available on the book's website. The nice thing about this book is that it explains mathematical concepts with a certain simplicity not found in other books of this kind.

It's a shame good content has to be weighted down by cheap tactics of the publisher. I'll be more cautious in buying online and will definitely avoid this publisher after this experience. So if you want the book, I suggest you find an old version with the hardcover.

Excellent computer graphics tutorial

This is a good solid introductory text on computer graphics theory and programming. Note that the book uses OpenGL rather than teaching it, so if you are looking for an OpenGL tutorial you will be disappointed. For that consult the classic "Red Book" on the subject. This book does throw in a couple of advanced topics - fractals, virtual realism, and ray tracing, for example. I really liked how the explanations were very detailed, and how pseudocode accompanies the explanation of every algorithm. The pseudocode is C-like and is therefore easily understandable. Also, the author makes excellent and frequent use of very excellent figures to get his points across. I also liked all of the practice problems, because they are good sanity checks on whether or not you really understand the material.

I will add that I was at first hesitant to add this book to my collection, because in the early 90's I used a textbook by this same author in a class I was taking on computer graphics, and it was about the most awful thing I have ever seen in print. There were a couple of good chapters, but most of it was paragraph after paragraph of rambling text without equations, codes, or anything that approached a tutorial. I wasn't a novice to this subject at the time, either, so it wasn't a lack of knowledge on the subject that made me hate that book. I'm saying all of this just in case this was your last experience with this author, don't let it prevent you from getting this book. Hill seems to have learned from his past mistakes, and I highly recommend this text. I notice the table of contents shown is for an older edition. This edition has changed considerably, so I show the new table of contents for the 3rd edition next:

You'll note that the main difference between the second and third editions is that Hidden Surface Removal and Fractals no longer have dedicated chapters, but additional chapters on other subjects have not been added. The HSR material is now part of another chapter, and the Fractal subject matter is part of the appendix. One positive difference is the addition of some good material on the OpenGL Shading Language, which is a hot topic these days. Also, the material in the appendix on Postscript has been eliminated.

Makes learning Computer Graphics **fun** !!

This is an excellent first book on Computer graphics using OpenGL - very accessible and enjoyable at the same time, with a good breadth of coverage as well.
I took a course under Prof. Hill while he was a visiting Prof. at the Indian Institue of Science, which used the draft of this book. We had a great time learning graphics with Prof. Hill - his enthusiasm is infectious, and this comes out in the textbook as well. We were able to develop a 'Tour of the Tajmahal' by the end of the course, with lots of special effects (like texturing, flying objects) - it was **beautiful** :-) !!
The book covers all the usual material expected in a Computer graphics textbook - transformations, modeling, texturing, hidden surface removal ........, as well as somewhat 'advanced' topics like ray-tracing.
The writing style is engaging and the explanations are very clear - this is a book that makes it easy to learn graphics. It also contains helpful tutorial material for all the maths background required, and a really huge number of exercises - obviously, you need not do all of them, just take your pick.
Please note that it is **not** a tutorial/reference on OpenGL - it merely uses OpenGL as the tool of choice for writing graphics code. If you want to learn OpenGL, please check out the 'Official guide to learning OpenGL' by Woo et al - we used that text in conjunction with this in our course, and it's really helpful for getting upto speed with OpenGL.
All in all, this is an excellent choice if you want an uptodate text on Computer graphics using OpenGL.

About the Author
Mike Peng is the Jindal Chair of Global Business Strategy at the Jindal School of Business, University of Texas at Dallas (UTD). At UTD, he founded the Center for Global Business, where he serves as the executive director. Professor Peng was also recently named a fellow with the Academy of International Business. He holds a bachelor's degree from Winona State University, Minnesota, and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington, Seattle. Prior to joining UTD, Professor Peng was on the faculty at the Ohio State University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and University of Hawaii, where he taught students at all levels and often served as a faculty trainer and consultant. In addition, he has held visiting or courtesy professorial appointments in Australia, Britain, China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and the United States. This award-winning professor is widely regarded as one of the most prolific and influential scholars in global business, and has garnered many research grants for his work. The United Nations and the World Bank have cited his work in major publications. Truly global in scope, his research focuses on firms' strategies in regions such as Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, and North America. He has published about 50 articles in leading academic journals and authored three books. Active in other leadership positions in his field, Professor Peng has served on the editorial boards of the ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT JOURNAL, ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT REVIEW, JOURNAL OF INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS STUDIES, JOURNAL OF WORLD BUSINESS, and STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT JOURNAL. Klaus Meyer is a Professor of Strategy and International Business at the School of Management, University of Bath, where he teaches Strategic Management and International Business. Klaus is also an adjunct professor at Copenhagen Business School. Previously, Klaus was a Professor in the Department of Management at the University of Reading, with association to the Center for International Business Research (CIBS). Before that, he spent eight years with the Center for East European Studies, Copenhagen Business School, Denmark, where he eventually became a Professor of International Business Strategy. Klaus also held visiting positions at the Department of Management and Organization at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (2001/02) and the Department of International Trade at National Cheng-chi University in Taiwan (spring 2005). Klaus' current research focuses on strategies of multinational enterprises in emerging economies and he is particularly interested in how firms adapt their business strategies to the specific conditions prevailing in each emerging economy. His research also extends to the impact of foreign investors on the economic transition and development of the host economies, for instance in the context of privatization related acquisitions. Another stream of research focuses on the global strategies that may bring multinational enterprises into emerging economies in the first place. Klaus also serves as a senior editor of the Asia Pacific Journal of Management.

An excellent textbook for international business (IB)

It is an excellent textbook for international business (IB). As a college instructor, I have used it in my class three semesters since 2008. Why do I like my students to benefit from this book?

1/ Knowledge: Students can understand the fundamental issues and concepts in IB, and apply knowledge to real world situations through the vivid cases. I appreciate that half of cases come from emerging markets, like BRICs. These help my students to know the importance of emerging markets, which are driving world economy out from financial crisis today.

2/ Analytical framework: While marketing textbooks focus on 4Ps, operations textbooks promote 7As, this book, which covers a vaster territory (the entire globe), only asks students to develop two frameworks: the institutional-based view and resource-based view. So this book not only helps student to absorb information, but also helps them to better organize and structure this messy information - how to use the framework to understand this rapidly changing world. After 10 years, the textbook will become obsolete, but students can still build their career informed by these two views.

3/ Critical thinking: This textbook helps students develop the skills to understand the multicultural aspects and international dimensions of the societies and the world in which they live. A series of debates can open students' eyes and build their global mental set. What is most refreshing is that the author does not give a single answer or simple evaluation for many questions, but provides many possible approaches to widen the reader's mindset. My students love the debates!

4/ Humanism: Globalization raises lots of dilemmas. To deal with this complexity, students need to develop a better appreciation for human values and the ability to make judgments based on ethical and environmental considerations. This book also discusses lots of ethic challenge in business, and gives corporate social responsibility (CSR) a special chapter. No other IB textbook has done that to CSR.

In the end, I also like this book because it raises a fundamental question in IB: what determinates the success and failure of firms around the world? It is totally different from other textbooks in IB, which typically don't even have one big question. I believe that this core question will continue to stimulate our students--we cannot learn until the right question has been asked.

Seriously, how did you get this published?

I was forced to buy this as a text book for grad school.

Fortunately Amazon had it used for $3.99, rather than the $260 new. Even at $3.99 I feel as if I were robbed.

This book tries to have a friendly to read, and semi-snarky attitude toward international trade.

It really just waters down the topic to a juvenile degree, and plain sucks.

The play that thrilled in 1995 may be even more relevant now.

"Skylight" won David Hare a shelf of awards in 1995. Now a new production is scorching London. It may come to New York with the London cast (Bill Nighy and Carey Mulligan). And, oh, it’s been filmed for broadcast in movie theaters in Great Britain and other countries.

Yeah, it’s that good.

You know Carey Mulligan because she was in “The Great Gatsby” and “Inside Llewyn Davis” and was nominated for an Academy Award for “An Education.” You know the lanky, floppy-haired Bill Nighy from many movies (“Love, Actually”) and "State of Play." As for David Hare, he’s a king of the English theater; he wrote “Plenty, “Pravda,” “The Blue Room” and Stuff Happens, and won Academy Award nominations for the screenplays of “The Reader” and “The Hours.”

Enough with credentials — what’s “Skylight” about?

Two people. In one room. For one night.

Shades of Samuel Beckett? More like George Bernard Shaw.

Tom Sergeant owns restaurants. He started small. He grew big — in his 50s, he’s rich. And, to his annoyance, he’s the pawn of the bankers who made him rich but loathe innovation and risk.

Kyra Hollis, who’s around 30, once worked for Tom. And more: she lived in his home. And more: she was close to Alice, his wife. And more: for six years, she and Tom had a secret affair. Alice found out. Kyra left that day. Now she lives in a dump and teaches poor kids at a school in a rough neighborhood.

Tom and Kyra haven’t seen one another for three years. Why does he show up now? Because Alice got cancer and, three years ago, died. Because he has no anchor. Because — but you know this — he wants Kyra to live with him.

Key fact: Margaret Thatcher left office in 1990. “Skylight” opened in 1995. Hare was no fan of Thatcher’s brand of conservative politics (think: Ronald Reagan). years of fun

Two years ago, my folks shipped me my piano, and, after years of non-activity, I have started playing again. This was one of the first books that I bought, and though I have years of work ahead of me if I want to play every piece in here, I am glad that I picked it. The piano part is scored extremely well. I doubt this is what Mr. Hornsby plays (especially having seen him live a few times), especially during the parts where there is full instrumentation and vocals. But the piano solos are scored quite close, and they are fun to play. I have not yet tuned my piano after its most recent move, and with a slightly out of tune turn of the century upright, these songs sound amazing as written. For beginners, some of the intros are pretty easy, and the melody line can be easily picked out. A good overall investment, in my view.
