great for any age

I first read SUMMER OF FEAR in high school and found it to be the first book I couldn't put down, actually reading it all the way through in one sitting! Lois Duncan takes typical teenage angst and self-conscious paranoia and spins them together in a web of horror and mystery.
Rachel is the number one priority of her family until her cousin Julia (parents recently deceased) moves in. The two bond as sisters at first, but when Julia begins to receive all the attention, Rachel's jealousy kicks into high gear. The spin here is when "accidents" and deaths become common place. Rachel suspects Julia to be responsible, but the jealousy Rachel's family has witnessed lend them to believe Rachel is just looking for attention, leaving her to discover her "cousin's" evil secrets and legacy.
A great suspense novel I still reread occasionally. Check out the movie starring a teenaged Linda Blair as "Rachel" and Fran (The Nanny) Drescher as her best friend!

This is an awesome book!

This book is awesome until the last gripping page. When I checked this book out at the library I was a little nervous because the cover art looked really scary. It turned out to be one of my favorite Lois Duncan titles yet.
The book starts out when Rachel's aunt and uncle die and their teenage daughter Julia comes to live with Rachel's family. Julia is incredibly beautiful and Rachel is jealous of her right away. Then she starts trying to steal Rachel's boyfriend and Rachel's brother. Rachel finds really strange things in the room she shares with Julia, things normal teenage girls wouldn't have. Rachel tries to warn her Mother and Father but they just brush it off as jealousy. Then the things go from bad to worse. You just have to read the story to find out!

Lois Duncan has done it again with the book Summer Of Fear

The author, Lois Duncan, has brought out the characters in this book, giving each of them unique traits. Lois Duncan has written yet another mystery novel that is filled with suspense and excitement. The story opens up with Rachel a seventeen-year-old girl remembering a summer when a strange incident happens. Her cousin Julia comes to live with them. Julia ruins Rachel's life and plans to take over. Julia starts by stealing her boyfriends and her girlfriends. During this story Rachel tries to convince her family and friends that Julia is bad. But of course her family does not believe her.
As Duncan travels the characters through the book she brings them through all of her troubles. I thought this book was great and I hope you will want to read it too.

Another Potential Series? Please!

As he has in his Adrian English, Holmes & Moriarty, Fair Game, Dangerous Grounds and I Spy series, master of mystery Josh Lanyon has grabbed us again with two completely different protagonists who fall instantly in lust, and then just can't figure out how to complete the circle to like and love without getting themselves almost killed along the way.

This one takes place in remote Oregon, where the town of Nearby has suddenly found itself in the middle of a mystery, or two, thanks to the instinct of its police chief, Frankie (a middle-aged lady), who has two deputies, one of whom, Ron Haskell, is as laid back as they come, and gay as a goose but not outwardly (sort of a mid-sized and toned down lumberjack type). He and his straight footloose and fancy free cop partner, Zeke, are at loose ends when they are assigned to pick up and work with two FBI agents who've flown in from Los Angeles to check out what chief Frankie believes could be a local link to a series of serial killings that have plagued the I-5 corridor for more than 20 years. One of those agents is the blond, toned, and spectacularly gorgeous Adam Darling, whose female partner is so similar in "composition" to him that Rob and Zeke immediately dub them Ken and Barbie.

That's where the kid's games stop.

This is a very neatly plotted, twist-and-turn Lanyon tour de force which concentrates on hiding clues from its cast and reader just as well as all his other series. The explosive beginning and hot-and-cold segues in the relationship between Rob and Adam leave you out on a hook until the very end--a very surprising end all around.

Along the way you will learn a lot about the Native American culture of the Northwest, the attitudes of the usual gang of stereotypical small-town characters, and the way mid-30s lonely gay men eventually have to face the future, with or without hope. I think Lanyon is giving us a clue in the ending of this one, and one would hope he's got another couple of adventures percolating for two very different, yet seriously compatible, men.

Thrilling, gripping mystery from an excellent author

I just finished reading Winter Kill and I’m feeling tremendously satisfied because, hands down, Josh Lanyon is so very good at what he does. And it's always lovely to see someone being amazingly skillful in his job.

This is a book about deputy sheriff Rob Haskell and FBI agent Adam Darling trying to solve murders which rapidly grow in number as the story continues. There seems to be a serial killer on loose. But that's definitely not all this story is about!

I enjoyed the sinister feeling the prologue threw over the book. And how the playful, joyful sparks of Rob and Adam’s first night together collides and mixes with the dark chase of a serial killer! The author really gives food for all our senses while walking us through cold, pine smelling landscape filled with sodden autumn leaves in the remote town of Nearby. There's a lot of delightful, sarcastic dialog and even a couple of small cross-over moments with Lanyon's All's Fair series. And it wouldn't be a Josh Lanyon book, if it didn't also have many poetic, thought-provoking images such as ”like the first time you saw butterflies covering carrion” and ”noticed soft, white snow angels in a graveyard”.

I really fell for the two main characters. I like how Adam is the voice of reason and how Rob acts more based on emotion. I like the city-boy-meets-wilderness aspect of the story. There is something irresistible about the dynamics between these two men. At the first glance they seem to be pretty much opposite personalities from each other, with very different way of thinking and acting. But… when you get to know them a bit better you realize how much in common they actually have. Their principals, their goals are the same (in work and in life in general). They’re just both approaching their principals and goals differently. I like how persistent Rob is and how analytically Adam thinks. And I like how their traits start to evolve towards each other during the story.

Near the end of the book there's an outburst of Rob’s that made my heart turn into an ice-cold snowball inside my chest. But I do love how we learn so much of both characters during these arguments between them. There are so many scenes that are like goldmines into the main characters’ personas. Glimpses into their past, telltales of what nuances in their character originate from what has happened to them in the past life. And what nuances are related to their hopes and dreams and what they believe in. I loved finding these delicately, skillfully, beautifully planted clues to who these men really are.

Josh Lanyon masterfully kept all the strings in his trustworthy hands throughout the story and made at least this reader to change her mind about primary suspect(s) for several times — all the way to the end. This mystery sure was a tricky one! I loved the complexity of it and the fact that the crimes were spread throughout such a long timespan. I throughly enjoyed how the author had sprinkled so many possible clues around and also gave us a few of those wonderful "Ah-ha!" moments near the end — the moments when the reader can feel herself as clever as an FBI agent! :-)

In the end Winter Kill left me with some "reason versus emotion” pondering. Both objectively thinking and spontaneous action helped to achieve positive, satisfying outcomes in this story. I find it intriguing. I find it real. I find it... reassuring. I find it as one of the hardest balancing acts in life.

Thank you for yet another great book, Mr. Lanyon. This one was like that wildflower growing from a crack in the pavement an inch from Adam’s nose — meaningful in so many ways.

bicker like children, and end up in bed

Perhaps I have read too many Josh Lanyon books in too short a time span. They are starting to blur into one. Still it is hard to miss the ubiquitous prickly hero, dealing (poorly) with a new partner and/or former lover years after the affair went south. We all know they will be thrown together on a case, bicker like children, and end up in bed. Lanyon really needs to find a new trope for his leads. The mysteries are decent, but I can't help but feel I've already read each new book because the hero is a copy of the previous one, right down to his description of sex, and how pleasurable it is, always "needing" to bottom.
All that said, I will probably continue to read Lanyon, but will put more time between books.

Needed Coverage of a Specific Topical Area

"Integrating Excel and Access" covers the topic spelled out in the book's title...the integration of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access. While this may appear to be a niche topical area, I found such integration to be important, especially when working with large and complex data sets using non-enterprise class tools.

The book does a good job covering the important area of the object models...for both Excel and Access. Utilizing and referencing object models across these two applications can prove to be a critical task when automating the integration of Access and Excel.

I used this book for the specific purpose of automating Excel from Access and vice-versa...thus my focus on object models. As such, I did not focus a great deal on the rest of the book's content.

This is the best reference I have come across related to the automation of Microsoft Excel from Microsoft Access and vice versa.

Excellent for Beginners and Intermediates

I have quite a bit of experience with Excel and I am new to using Access. Right now, I am writing tools for business use and some personal use and this book has helped me a lot. It has also shown easier methods to build tools than some of what I have done in the past.

It is perfectly matched to what I needed for a current tool I am writing.

I definitely recommend this book for beginners and intermediates also if you have significant experience you may not find it helpful.

Finally, someone puts the pieces together.

I have spent the past ten years making my living developing integrated & automated financial systems using Excel, Access, and VBA for accounting and finance departments. That said, I literally have dozens of Excel, Access, and VBA books on my bookshelf. This is the only book that I have ever seen that integrates Excel and Access. It of course uses VBA to accomplish much of this.

Why it has taken so long for someone to put the pieces together in one book I am not sure. What I am sure of is how useful this book is. If you use Excel and Access this book is a must. This should be your primary reference for integrating and automating Excel and Access. You will learn better ways to do what you are already doing. You will also learn ways to do things that you never knew were possible. As a result, your applications will be more efficient, more powerful, more accurate, more reliable, and finally, you will be a better programmer/developer.

My work as a consultant puts me in a position to help others learn new ways to use Excel, Access, and VBA on a daily basis. When I show users what is possible, things that are covered in this book, they are not only impressed, they are amazed. They now do things that they never dreamed possible.

Integrating the two object models using VBA allows you to fully automate your applications/models. You can now do it minutes, if not seconds, what used to take you hours or days. You remove the possibility of the user making errors because the user is no longer manually manipulating the data (copying, pasting, etc.) You are not changing formulas, expressions, or criteria. You are allowing the computer to do all of that for you. This book, combined with advanced VBA makes true automation possible.

Even if you only desire to be an intermediate user, this book will make using Excel data in Access so much easier. It will of course also make it easier for you to get data from Access into Excel, and I am not talking about copying the results from a select query into an Excel worksheet. I am talking about using either the ODBC connection, or using SQL in VBA, to filter the data coming out of Access into Excel. As such, you get only the records that you want, with the click of a button.

In a nutshell, this book is a must for anyone that uses Excel and Access for a common task. I have read thru this book twice already, and it is my number one reference book. Once you open this book, you too will be asking, why it has taken so long for someone to put using the two programs together in one book.

You don't need any other book if you are a seeker. Muktansnda Swami wrote of the shavite and yogic traditions in a toyally comprehensible way. One might want to read another author from academia and get dry analysis on the sutra and agamas

Dr. Clarke argues that labels such as empiricism and rationalism are useless for understanding Descartes because, at least in his scientific methodology, he is very much an Aristoletian for whom reflection on ordinary experience is the primary source of scientific hypotheses. Descartes traditionally has been presented as a classic example of rationalism in science, especially by philosophers who concentrated their attention on the Meditations or the Discourse. A different perspective is gained by reading Descartes as a practicing scientist and by examining his scientific work and correspondence with other seventeenth-century scientists. These texts suggest that the author relies very much on experience, and in some cases on scientific experiments to support his theories or to dispute those of others. Descartes scientific practice is even consistent with a less rationalistic interpretation of the Regulae and the Discourse than is normally defended.

Got this for my girlfriend for Christmas.

Pros: Coloring book is really well done and quite amusing. Lots of activities and she seems to enjoy it because it's relaxing for her to color in hunks after a long day.

Cons: Coloring book made it even more abundantly clear that if my girlfriend ever meets Ryan Gosling, I'm toast.

This coloring book is not designed for coloring.

The pictures were good, but the paper is so thin you can see the words bleeding through from the other side of the page, and its slick, thin paper makes coloring difficult. Also, it doesn't open wide enough to comfortably color the pictures. I bought this as a good gag gift and for the poor design itself I wish I hadn't. If they changed these issues it would be worth the money.

I haven't even started coloring and I've already gotten so much mileage out of it... even my grandmother was highly entertained. My only criticism is that they are missing a few "beefcakes" (namely Tom Hiddleston, Chris Evans, Zachary Quinto, Chris Pine, and the Hemsworth brothers... to name a few). But that won't hinder my enjoyment of this coloring book.
