The newest kind of science

Some years ago the German doctor of chemistry Peter Plichta published a revolutionary theory in which he is claiming matter and energy to be encoded in numbers. Because the style of Plichta's writings, see God's Secret Formula: The Deciphering of the Riddle of the Universe and the Prime Number Code, was not always appropriate for scientific argumentation, he could not overcome the initial resistance to his ideas and was seen by the multitude as a mere crank. It was even not advisable to refer to Plichta in a serious scientific paper, and this explains, why Plichta in this book is not mentioned despite Plichta's prime number cross page can be seen on page 132.

Jan Boeyens, one of the leading professors of theoretical chemistry, is confronting the main stream theories of relativity, quantum theory, wave-particle duality, orbital angular momentum, atomic shape and chemical bonding in the second part of this book with an alternative theory of the periodic laws, chemical interaction, structure theory and even cosmology. Becoming addicted to short histories

I am getting addicted to short histories and these brief Readers' Digest style reminders are helping me to expand and keep my memories in order. This time the reminder is about World War One, and the background to this terrible conflict has always been far too complex for me to remember and understand.

Mark Black has again done a good job in outlining the major factors but it is probably a bit too brief for such a large historical event. I am still bemused, especially as most of the nation states no longer exist. We might think that our international politics are complex but relationships and treaties between States, Emperors, the Tsar etc were even more complex than now. It is hard to imagine the long-term enmity between nations that were vying with one another for power and empires, and the tremendous patriotism that lured a generation to their deaths.

As an Aussie I thought that a little more could have been said about the debacle of the Gallipoli campaign and Churchill's part in this tragedy. Also the importance of the entry of the Americans and the new found power of tanks was probably a bit understated. I also can't recall any mention that the Versailles Treaty was not ratified by the US Congress.

The "War to end all Wars" never achieved lasting peace - all it did was set the scene for an even more extensive world conflict in just over 20 years.

I will probably take a break for a while - but I will return later for another dose of history.

Decent outline

This book was not well written. It contains spelling, grammatical, and syntax errors. Although the book progresses more or less in chronological order, it somehow failed to tell the story in a way that provided a good sense of how events transpired. Granted, it was meant to be a macro view, but it could have been better

The challenge in writing "brief" histories of such broad targets is that so much glossing over is required that invariably some important events are glossed over and complex issues are subjected to oversimplification. This is not the first of the "Very Brief History" products I've read, nor do I suspect, will it be the last. I am always impressed by the massive amount of information provided in such a small amount of space. Such brevity is certainly out of the realm of my own writing talents so I tell myself I'm merely "admiring" the skill and not envying or coveting it. That way it's a good thing, right? RIGHT??? Why is my nose growing?

Anyway, the amount of information crammed into this short expose' on "the War to End All Wars" is certainly enough to whet one's initial thirst for knowledge of the subject while encouraging a desire for additional details. I did deduct 1/2 star because of a couple of grammatical/formatting mistakes. I also feel that this series should provide at least a brief selection of more detailed books for readers interested in learning more about aspects of the War. In this particular volume, perhaps suggested titles regarding Galipoli, The Sinking of the Lusitania and its role in drawing the United States into things, The Assasination of the Kaiser, and of course a title or two about how the Treaty of Versailles provided the means for Hitler to rise to power and set the stage for WWII a scant 20 years later, would suffice. The lack of such a "suggested further reading" list is the reason for the deduction of the second 1/2 star from the total.

Overall however, this book, like the others in the series, does a remarkable job of compressing a massive amount of information into a small, short, read without turning it all into a boring litany of tedious facts. I definitely recommend it for any and all readers over the age of 12 seeking an introduction to the subject.

About the Author
Marion G. Mason received her PhD in Developmental Psychology from The Ohio State University in 1992.  Since that time she has spent nearly two decades guiding undergraduates through courses in Human Development and Adulthood and Aging as part of the psychology program at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania.  Immersing herself in the growing use of technology in the classroom, Mason has worked on numerous consulting projects in the development of online testing, demonstrations, activities, and ebooks.

The United States Football League began in 1982 with high hopes in lucrative TV contracts, enthusiastic, well-heeled owners, a full 1983 schedule, and predicted fan support. Byrne, the league's communications director, tells the sad results as the league limped through three spring seasons of falling attendance, waning ABC and ESPN networks ratings, warfare among owners Donald Trump, John Bassett, and others, and failing finances. The Pyrrhic $1 judgment (with triple damages) in 1986 in its antitrust suit against the NFL wrote finis to the dreams. Despite an overly detailed story with too frequent use of locker room language, this is pro football history that readers of David Harris's NFL saga The League ( LJ 10/15/86) will want. A Solid Read About What Could Have Been

Jim Byrne had a front-row seat to the wild, three-year ride of the United States Football League. He gets a little long winded at times, but all in all, this is a very good book and a must-have for all fans of the old USFL. Byrne sort of sets them up and knocks them down - telling the league's botching of a TV deal, the Donald Trump led campaign to go head to head with the NFL and the eventual "victory" in court. I thought he was especially colorful in the very beginning of the book when he describes Harry Usher trying to keep the 1985 championship trophy from falling apart on him while at the same time the league itself was falling apart all around him. Like I said, Byrne gets a little off the subject from time to time, but it's a great read for any fan of spring football.

Amazing!

I know a lot of people out there have been trying to get a copy of The $1 League for a while and I have two words of advice: don't stop. The book is amazingly detailed and gives first-hand insight into what made the USFL what it was: decent football, a good idea, and a cluster-.. of egos that blew the entire concept apart. If you're interested as to why the USFL failed, this book will set everything straight. If you want detailed game accounts, you won't find it here. Check out Paul Reeths' website instead.

Wow! If you want to read a book about the trials and tribulations of a person involved in something that is perceived to be world class yet is actually mickey mouse and held together with smoke, mirrors and a little crazy glue, then this is your book. I've read it 3 times and will read it agian. It is very informative about the rise and fall of the USFL as well as being in the unique position to laugh at the league and some of the 'low lights'. This is an honest portrayal of life in the USFL and worth the read.
