Great, but the future is not that scary.

While it has a little bit of doom and gloom, it does offer some great information and insight into the direction culture is going. There is plenty of research in this book, and while some of the claims appear to be very well researched, other claims feel more like speculation and assumptive without much support. I recommend reading this, but also seeking other contrary opinions as well. The authors do not seem to put much effort into contradicting evidence (some, but not nearly enough). I also think it is easy to get into this because it is easy to believe and we can use this book to find examples in many aspects of our culture today (sometimes a little too well, confirmation bias).

A wake-up call to spoiled First-world societies

This is a very chatty analysis of how American society has been gradually forsaking traditional morality in favour of a new self-centred superficial narcissism, having become ruder and more obnoxious in the process. It analyses the problem at the national and cultural (not individual) level.
The one flaw I find however, is that they never convincingly debunk the theory of narcissism as a cover for low self-esteem, as argued (more persuasively and thoroughly) in other books e.g. Masterson's "Search for the real self" or Stout's "The sociopath next door". Clearly, narcissism can have multiple causes and guises.
Overall however this book is a useful warning, alerting the public to a highly damaging and negative mentality that is getting out of hand in many developed societies.

This book will explain much of the rude behavior you encounter.

This book is spot on! Gosh, they have identified what's wrong with so many people in our society. They're narcissists! That's why we are all faced with so much totally selfish, thoughtless and unacceptable behavior! They clearly defined narcissism. You'll recognize many people you know in this well written book. The lay person as well as the professional will find it interesting. Also tells you how not to buy into the narcissist's sick behavior.
