The study of varieties of capitalism is moving on from the analysis of static national types to embrace local and sectoral diversity and the study of systems in the process of major change. This volume addresses the issue by examining four localised sectors, comparing a German case with one in another European country. The general changes taking place in Germany itself and the other countries (Hungary, Sweden, and the UK) form the context of the studies. The case studies concern:

* Furniture making in North-Rhine Westphalia and southern Sweden,
* Automotive manufacture in east Germany and northern Hungary,
* Biotechnology around Munich and Cambridge,
* TV programme and film-making in Cologne and central London.

The studies find a complex pattern of conformity with, and deviation from, national types, but only occasional examples of where divergence takes the form of a direct confrontation with a national model. This is partly because national models are themselves changing; partly because they are often capable of accommodating more diversity than is often assumed by national studies; and partly because firms are increasingly able to reach outside their national boundaries for institutional resources.

About the Author

Professor Colin Crouch is chair of the Institute of Governance and Public Management at the Business School of Warwick University. He is also the External Scientific member of the Max-Planck-Institute for the Study of Societies at Cologne. He previously taught sociology at the LSE, and was fellow and tutor in politics at Trinity College, Oxford, and professor of sociology at the University of Oxford. Until December 2004 he was professor of sociology at the European University Institute, Florence. He is a Fellow of the British Academy. Helmut Voelzkow is Professor for the International Comparison of Societies at the University of Osnabrück.

Flowers are the just the sweetest things...

The book begins with a beautiful quote: "Flowers are the sweetest thing God ever made and forgot to put a soul into." Now I think some hippies would disagree, haha, but you can tell Soon Y Warren is smitten with them. One look at her striking and realistic renditions of nature's most beautiful and delicate offerings and you will understand why she is such a celebrated, award-winning artist. She uses many layers and texture techniques that may sound more advanced, but beginners are not to be discouraged, as she explains how to fully utilize common tools and gives a detailed color palette description. I truly haven't found such a helpful guide for painting flowers since the section Zoltan Sabo gives in his Painting Little Landscapes. Experiment with Soon Y Warren's light and shadow techniques, or just enjoy the pictures!

Finally!

A book that REALLY explains watercolors! Explained the way they should be. This enables me to understand opaque, transparent etc. I was looking for a book that showed vibrant brilliant colors done in watercolor and this book meets all my expectations and more. The great detail is a blessing too.

Soon warren does beautiful work and her paintings have lots of very fine detail. You can learn a lot about how to do that in this book. The projects are very well thought out and easy to follow.

About the Author
Pascale Fournier is Associate Professor of Law at the University of Ottawa and a Research Associate at the University's Human Rights Research and Education Centre (HRREC). Professor Fournier received her LL.B in Law (1997) from Laval University, her LL.M. (2000) from the University of Toronto and her S.J.D. (2007) from Harvard Law School. Before arriving at Harvard, she served as Law Clerk to Justice L'Heureux-Dubé at the Supreme Court of Canada. Her scholarship focuses on comparative family law, Islam and Judaism in Europe and North America, constitutional law and freedom of religion, migration in the context of globalization, and the relationship between multiculturalism and gender. Her current research project, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, investigates the migration of two forms of religious divorces (the Jewish Get and the Islamic Talaq) in Canada, France, Britain and Germany, and the effects of such migration on Jewish and Muslim women. Pascale has lectured at the State University of Haiti, McGill University, the University for Peace in Costa Rica and the Institute for Women's Studies and Research in Iran. Simply the best microbiology review book

This book is great. It covers everything you need to know for step 1, while leaving out all you dont' need to know. The questions are probably the best micro vignette questions out there, and helps reinforce what you learned from the book.

This book is much better than micro made ridiculously simple in terms of boards review. Its written in outline format so you can get through it much faster, and it includes an immunology section that has all you need to know for the immunology questions on the step.

The only thing I don't like is the Rapid Review format. At times the outline format should be written in complete sentences (like the high-yield series) to avoid confusing statments/facts. For me, this seemed especially true in the immunology section, which can be confusing if you have a weak immuno background.

Other than that, this is a great review book. The only review book for micro in my opinion.

Good content, but not nearly comprehensive

I am a big fan of the Rapid Review series. The Pathology version by Goljan, as far as I'm concerned, is just as essential as First Aid when it comes to reviewing for class and Step 1. However, Microbiology and Immunology are what I would consider two of the most important topics covered on Step 1 along with pathology, pharmacology, and neuroscience. This book has some good review material in it, but is far from comprehensive. Many topics are discussed extremely briefly or omitted entirely. I could only recommend this book for someone who has Microbiology and Immunology down very well and just needs a super quick refresher. To be honest, First Aid does a better job of covering this material.

*** This review is regarding the content of the book only. I do own this book, but I have not accessed the Student Consult online material. Although I have accessed it for the pathology book in this series. From that material I have deduced that it can't make that big of a difference; but I could very easily be wrong.

Review of Microbiology and Immunology

Perfect for medical microbio class. I used Micro Made easy for class, and after reading this book to review for the boards I would definately recommend it over Micro made easy. The organization is better, it's a shorter text, has an outline format, has excellent tables that while are not as detailed as the micro made easy book are a lot easier to read, and it has everything you need to know for class, which micro made easy does not.

Immuno section is a bit brief but it has all the essentials. I would also recommend reading Immunobiology by Janeway and Medical Microbiology by Murray. Both texts are outstanding and really help you appreciate the subjects.

Ted Steinberg is Davee Professor of History and Law at Case Western Reserve University. A better view of America's underbelly

Steinberg's angle shows a fascinating underbelly of well-known historic events, be they government land sales, mill dams, gold rushes, fence enclosure laws, cattle booms, dust bowls, suburban sprawl, or sewage treatment plants. We get a clear overview on the march of privatization for rivers, Native lands, and national forests, or of public subsidies for farming, ranching, and forestry industries. The mistakes of the past, like systematically turning almost all organic wastes from fertilizer into garbage, are explained so practically that their reversibility seems equally doable. It's a book that provides a realistic grasp of what America's most basic issues are, and of what's most important for it's future.

The previously untold story of America's History

This book has changed the way that I see the environment for the rest of my life. I realize such a claim is bold and dramatic but it is entirely true. I read this book for a college course that I took this semester and I did not expect to enjoy it since it was required reading. I am a Finance and Marketing major, I don't come from a history, science, or environment background. Nevertheless I enjoyed this book from its very beginning to its end. Even the parts of history that I thought I understood were told in new light with relevant information that had never come up in any of my prior classes on American history.

I was also sad to discover that this book was removed from regular print and circulation. I feel that everyone needs to read this book and that it should be released in a new print for the country to read and understand. I would consider it important enough to be on the list of required reading by anyone who considers themselves a reader. If not, this is the perfect book to get started!

Introduction
Terry Kottman defines play therapy as an approach to counseling young children in which the counselor uses toys, art supplies, games, and other play media to communicate with them on their level using their "language". The association for Play Therapy defines it as, "the systematic use of theoretical model to establish an interpersonal process in which trained play therapist use the therapeutic powers of play to help clients prevent or resolve psychosocial difficulties and achieve optimal growth and development".

Salient Points - Basic concepts and history of play therapy
Kottman stated that according to Schaefer (1993), there are fourteen therapeutic powers of play and that each of them have specific beneficial outcomes for clients. The powers of play include, overcoming resistance, communication, competence, creative thinking, catharsis, abreaction, role-play, fantasy/visualization, metaphoric teaching, attachment formation, relationship enhancement, positive emotion, mastering developmental fears, and game play. According to the author, the earliest recording of play as an intervention during therapy was done by Sigmund Freud and his daughter Anna during the early part of twentieth century.

Skills of play therapy.
Kottman discussed in the texts skills in which a therapist has to master in order to be an effective helper. She provided a brief look at the different approaches to play therapy that counselors and therapist currently use and introduced logistical aspects of play therapy including the process of the session from beginning to end. Some skills discussed in the text include tracking, restating content, and reflecting feelings, setting limits, returning responsibility to the child, and dealing with questions.

Issues in play therapy
Some issues in play therapy include public awareness of this type of intervention, and the impact that managed health care may have on the profession (negative or positive).

Personal Reaction
Play therapy is an excellent intervention technique for counselors to use when working with young children between ages 3 and 14 years. Time constraints, counselors working more on paperwork and less individual and group counseling also contribute to a less conducive atmosphere for play therapy. I know a significant number of students that are part of the special education program at some of the schools in my neighborhood and think this technique greatly benefits them. I personally would recommend this book to anyone who might be dealing with the problem it addresses because, I think, the author did an excellent job with the writing and contents.

Really Covers the Basics and Beyond

This textbook is a wonderful starting point for beginning play therapists. It fills you in on the history and development of play therapy as well as how to develop your skills as a play therapist and what you need to fill your playroom. I love play therapy and I'm looking forward to using this book to help me build my perfect playroom in the future!
