but I am glad I didn't rely on it as my only study ...

I used this book to supplement my study for the English Praxis exam: I primarily relied on a grammar textbook and my humanities textbooks (for the literature study). This book is okay; it does cover the three parts of the exam, however, not in very much depth. The questions in the chapters and on the practice tests were generally comparable to those on the exam.
My complaint with this study guide is, to some extent, a minor one. Some of the "test" questions were actually subjective, opinion questions and other questions were worded badly. I also found some of the answer justifications mystifying. Ex: the answer justification that states that diction choices cannot be found in a dictionary; and the answer justification that assumes op-eds are based on facts. Some answer choices were simply incorrect: the answer that gives the wrong definition for the logical fallacy of equivocation and the answer that confuses historic context with story setting.
In regards to stories, the literature section was, I believe, too skimpy to adequately cover much literature. The canons the authors included ignored some of the most important female authors who are recognized as canonical by at least half a dozen universities that I am acquainted with. That is why I relied on some of my college textbooks for the literature study instead. As my original teaching endorsement is in history however, I must point out the most glaring of all mistakes (in my opinion): the authors wrote that the printing press was invented during the Victorian Period (1832-1900). How on earth did that get past two authors and the editors??
In short, the usefulness of this study guide is somewhat questionable; however, it does provide some practice with the types of questions on this particular Praxis Exam. I am not sorry I bought it, but I am glad I didn't rely on it as my only study source.

Passed praxis first time

I'm a music teacher looking to add an endorsement in secondary English "just in case." Used this book to see where the holes in my knowledge are. Practice tests were also very helpful. Sometimes I did need other sources for more concentrated practice in certain skills. I passed the praxis my first time!

Follows the content on the test to a T.

After years of not taking a single English class, I decided nursing wasn't for me (I'm a registered nurse) and I wanted to pursue the dream I had of becoming a teacher. I had no clue where to start but I did some research and was determined to find a good study tool. I ordered this book and another but really focused on studying this book because I noticed it followed the objectives that were on the praxis website for the exam. I took a few weeks to study it backwards and forwards (because I had to reteach myself a lot of stuff) and I passed the test the first time.
If you are I ended up not even bothering with the other book. This was the only one I used.
If you're like me, and it's been a while since you've taken an english course--this is THE book to study.
