Beauty is timeless, and so is this book

Here's the thing about the suggestions in Deidre Hall and Lynne Bowman's books: They work. This message was brought home to me in their first book, Deidre Hall's Kitchen Closeup, when they asserted that men like a certain kind of soup they labeled "Genius Soup". Really?, my skeptical mind thought. Well, I haven't made that particular recipe in a few months, and the other day my husband asked me "to please make that soup from Deidre's book." Bear in mind this is about the only item I've prepared that he's mentioned again months later, let alone requested as a meal. I took an informal survey and it seems others had the same experience as well.

And now, Deidre Hall's How Does She Do It? A Beauty Book. I will relate my personal experience in a moment, but let's start with the basics. Hall and Bowman begin this work with an endearing look at their own mothers, both clearly beautiful women in their own right, and their message is crystal clear: Beauty is timeless; it's only the tools that have changed.

To that end, Hall and Bowman go into detail about many of the beauty methods available in all areas today. They present the levels of the beauty preparedness one must have on something akin to the US Terror Alert Scale. If you find yourself nodding in agreement and recognition, prepare to do so for the entire book. Their sense of humor and self-deprecating attitude is made manifest as they detail many areas of beauty tools and treatments, such as: Sleep, posture, makeup, lighting, shopping, skin care, permanent makeup, hair care, plastic surgery, exercise, weight loss, dental work, and fragrance. Each of these areas is given a healthy (so to speak) treatment; no stone or eyeshadow palette is left unturned as Hall and Bowman pepper the book with pictures and anecdotes from their own careers and search for the ultimate beauty tips, tricks and tools in each area they cover. As in their first book, their tone is not at all preachy; my favorite line, for example, is "The girl who put down the books and slept will also look way better at the exam, by the way." Hall and Bowman make clear that they're sharing their hard-earned knowledge in each of the areas. They include interviews with experts when needed, and it's clear they're just as eager to learn as we are.

And now, to my own personal experiment with this book. The day after I received the book, I decided to turn a routine Friday night dinner invitation into a Defcon-, er, level-five event. For the uninitiated, level one is somewhere around rolling out of bed and looking ok enough to open the door and take in the paper, and level five is where one should be to attend a function like a wedding - or, in Hall's case, to be filmed for a daily national TV show. I primped, preened, painted, and incorporated almost every other suggestion from the book which was available at my disposal. Would anyone notice my 'leveling-up'? Well, compliments did pour in, and with every "Wow! What's different? You look great!", my smile got a little bit bigger. Bowman and Hall's suggestions aren't just fun to read; they work.

I'll end with one more anecdote. The same day I read the book, I was speaking on the phone with my grandmother. We normally chat about light topics, but our discussion veered to what her mother-in-law and family members took out of Europe when they escaped before the war. She told me they took religious artifacts, "and also they took the clothes". Now, she meant it in an only-the-shirt-on-their-backs type of way, but I couldn't help it - I had just finished this book, after all. I started giggling. "They took the clothes?" I said. My grandmother, catching my drift, giggled back. "Yes they did. The women took the clothes." Beauty is timeless, and so is this book. Buy your copy today.

The honest truth about Hollywood beauties

I think every women has looked at the Hollywood beauties and wondered how they always looks so beautiful and this book tells you just that. Deidre is so open and honest about everything from plastic surgery and permanent make up to fitness and fashion. If you want honest answers, this is the book for you. It's a great read, very informative!

How Does She Do It?? A resheshing look at simple, at home, beauty tips.

The new book by Deidre Hall and Lynne Bowman was a pure joy to read. This book was not written by someone who has a mere theory about beauty tips, but by women who have been in the spotlight for over 30 years. Over the years, Deidre has been employed in a career that makes looking her best a necessity. Although cosmetic alterations are mentioned, Deidre and Lynne make sure they aren't pre-requisites to looking your very best. A few exercises, a simple change in posture, lighting,etc. make a positive difference in how we appear to others. I would have to say my favorite part of the book, is the simply put, everyday humor that we all need in our life. I laughed several times while reading the book and continue to think of funny comments made by Deidre and Lynne. I do believe these women knew what they were doing by making it humorous, because laughter and smiles are some of our best features. You will not be disappointed by this book and the hard work they put into it paid off extremely well. There were also amazing pictures of their friendship through the years that were highly appreciated. Hope you enjoy as much as I.

I really loved it! It’s hilarious and embarrassing and really helped ...

My mom got me this book and, although I don’t have much time to read, I really loved it!  It’s hilarious and embarrassing and really helped me know that there is no straight line to success. I’m a college engineering junior struggling with my classes when it seems like everyone else just like, “gets it” so easily. I’m also minorly freaked out about graduating and having to compete with those brainiacs for a job once i’m thrown into the real world.  After reading Extreme You I realized that I’m giving up without even trying.  I just never imagined that even the most successful people fail along the way.  And, although I hate the idea of those failures, I get it that they are necessary for growth and that I can’t run scared if I’m going to do great things with my life.

Honest, real, inspiring and funny - a great read to get in kick ass mental shape.

Sarah Robb O'Hagan could not be more authentic in how she tells her story to success, but peppered with many admirable and honest failures. She makes it believable that everyone has a chance to be a bigger or "kick ass" version of ourselves and it's not a given or smooth path. Her reality and honesty is rare in a world where perfect seems all too common and simultaneously unreachable. Her story is combined with others - many well known and famous others - who have similar tales of where they have fallen down, not gotten the trophy and how they emerged. A great, inspiring read for anyone who wants to live large and create their own path to bigger.

Poetic and Dreamlike Prose with Very Realistic Themes

I fell in love with the prose of this book. It is a beautiful, tragic and redemptive story with very real themes throughout the book. The intensity and emotion felt in Donan's novella is quite real. While the story is great, the prose is exceptional. The novella is written in a very poetic prose and I drunk in the words like a fine wine. I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 because it could benefit from a proofreader, but overall, I thought this was an outstanding read and I would certainly recommend it to other readers.

A good and important read.

This novella is an interesting story with a storyline that smoothly reveals itself, through the characters who are easy to relate to. I enjoyed reading it. It is, in some ways, not an easy story to read specifically for the reason that it is an important read. It is the story of our present day troops and their families, and it relates their true sacrifice and daily challenges, at war and at home.
I look forward to reading more from P.C. Donan as his writing matures.
I recommend this novella to readers of all ages, especially for those who wish to be considered a supporter of our troops.

Slow start, but a lovely and heartfelt finish. (hopefully not too serious of spoilers)

In the beginning of the book he describes the courtship between a soldier and his girlfriend. There were parts of it that I loved, I even enjoyed how fast paced that part of the book was. I got the sense that I was seeing glimpses into that part of their lives, but that the meatier parts were coming up. My only criticism about that beginning part is that sometimes it felt a little clinical, I didn't feel that some of the language was fitting with the characters. If the book continued on like that the entire time I would have rated 2-3 stars. Read on to see why I gave it 4.

The book takes an unexpected turn when the soldier deploys. The writing is much better and I was transported along with the soldier to wartime. The author really hit his stride in writing from the mind of a soldier, it felt really real from then on. As the story unfolds I was swept along on an emotional ride, being an Army wife myself, it wasn't hard to put myself in the shoes of both main characters. I appreciate this book for telling the truth about how things are in the darker side of war, and how it can affect one's mind. It's an important topic that needs to be discussed.

It's clear that Donan is a beginning author, but his work shows so much promise. He has quite a talent and I am glad I read this book. I look forward to reading more of his works as they become available.

Review of the Kindle Version

The Kindle version currently available is a scan of the book converted to text through OCR. It has innumerable errors, no working Table of Contents, no working footnotes, no reflowable text, etc. (Don't take my work for it. Download the sample.)

The exact, same text is easily available elsewhere for free. The current cost of the Kindle version is ridiculous considering the little effort it took to generate and the inconvenience of having to decipher the OCRed mess.

Having read the book several times, I believe it to be of sufficient value to have available for reference and reading wherever I may take my Kindle.

So if it is worth your time and effort, create your own copy of the book. I am.

4.5 Stars for an Authentic Bible Perspective of the 19th Century Version of Jesus' Native Country

This original edition of 1916 is a hardcover of 438 pages. With big letters and short 23 lines per page, this number may get divided at least by two to get a feeling of the real length of this book.

The author is putting the Bible text of the New Testament into the context of his branch of culture, which is geographically the same as Jesus', while the Christian author was a youth in the 19th century, before he migrated into the US. "Syrian" in 1916 gets a bit lost in time warp translation, in today's world, it would be better termed "The Palestinian Christ". The insight of Abraham Mitrie Rihbany is invaluable in overstanding many text passages of the Bible, the modern Westerner would be lost without. This book has directly influenced the work of Rocco A. Errico (e.g. Let There Be Light: The Seven Keys).

We read about the more intense emotional and theatrical state, less inhibitions (both for better and for worse), the holy duty of hospitality, the sin of hording dunza (money), a melancholic view on the good old ways of agriculture and an attempt of a mystical approach to the nonexistence of genders. Which, well, doesn't really live up to non-discriminatory expectations in a modern sense... I was a bit surprised to read the term "Mohammedan" so often, considering that the author used to live this close to a predominantly Muslim society (which doesn't appreciate that term). Overall very recommendable nevertheless and complementary to Errico's books.

This book offers fascinating insight into the culture and thought processes of the people of Jesus' time. For those of us in the West, many things get misinterpreted or misunderstood when we look at the Bible though a 21st Century, western lens. Always good to hear from someone else's perspective and understanding.

Another GREAT one!!!

Another 5 ***** book by my homie, Christina C. Jones. I really liked this story because it was a light, fun read. What I mean by light, is there wasn't much drama or dark scenes within the story. Other that Ty and Mekhi's mothers acting a damn fool, this story was fun. Lauren and Ty were a breath of fresh air. Although it took a while for Lauren to stop running from Ty, once she finally gave him a shot, she couldn't keep a smile off her face. I have to say, Ty knew what he wanted and he continue to pursue Lauren until she finally gave in to him. He was very patient with her but it paid off. Lauren had a lot of things going on in her life that many people wouldn't and couldn't handle. Being a mother, working and going to school. I'm sure being separated from her daughter was killing her. Ty had a lot going on too. Namely, dealing with his crazy ex, Jamila. All that drama she caused and for what? She more concerned about appearance and what everyone else thought than she actually loved him. Her crazy a$$ was just as bipolar as Mekhi. Neither one really wanted to be with Lauren or Ty. It was all about appearance with them. Lauren and Ty's story was cool. Like I said earlier, it was a breath of fresh air. Now, I want to go back and read Bianca and Rashad's story again. Bianca showed up and showed out in this one. She didn't hold back when she told Lauren the truth. I loved it. Another great story by one of my favorite authors. Thanks again Christina.

The Trouble is Just Right!

Have I mentioned lately that Christina C. Jones is one heck of a writer? If not, then I just said it again. The Right Kind of Trouble was yet another example of why I love to read romance novels. Christina always gives readers a different story. Her stories are never boring and she gives the readers something to enjoy. Lauren and Ty are the central characters in this story. Lauren was introduced in The Trouble With Us as Bianca's younger sister. Lauren is a 21 year old highly intelligent college senior working on completing her degree, when she started to notice the guy from the library who smelled like books and was smoking hot. Ty happened to notice Lauren as well and sets out to make her his lady. With each of the first few encounters Lauren ran like a track star to get away from Ty. Her confidence level was -500 and counting. Lauren tended to overthink his attraction to her until one day things just started to click.. I liked the flow of the story, as it had a comfortable feeling..a realness. The ancillary characters added some amusement to the story and a few villains to give the story a little bite. Thank goodness Ty was a patient man when he had three women in his life having a field day with his emotions. Read and you will enjoy this latest installment by one of my favorites...CCJ is a magnificent artist, I love the stories she paints with eloquent words.

Trouble has never been better to find!

Study...go to work..talk to Harper...study..talk to Harper..wait sleep. This was Lauren's life. A studious young woman with her head on straight. Because this was what was responsible..safe...and no trouble. But in her pursuit of excellence, she never thought trouble would wake her up..literally. Ty is just the guy to make Lauren break all the rules...even if it means a little heartbreak along the way. Because really, what's a fairy tale without some drama before the HEA?

I throughly enjoyed this book. I'm always amazed at how diverse Christina Jones can be with her story telling ability. She gets better and better with each book she puts out. The plot had a little bit of everything to keep me engaged. The flow was always natural and the pacing just right to set the tone of the story. Her innate ability to create plausible storylines and churn out unique characters always makes for a good read. Though Lauren and Ty kept me entertained, her minor characters were nothing to sneeze at. At one point I even found myself pulling for the other guy vying for Lauren's attention lol. Additionally, The conclusion was fulfilling and totally left me satisfied.

This is your guide if you are trying to visit Mexico on your lunch money.

"Let's Go Mexico" has been running with the big dogs (Rough Guide & Lonely Planet) for years and it is the best guide out for those on a "starving student" budget.

There is a great section at the beginning of the book, "Discover Mexico", which has five suggested itineraries - excellent. The "Beyond Tourism" chapter will help those looking for volunteer opportunities, environmental preservation, social action, teaching English and studying everything from language to college level courses. These two sections alone are worth the price of the book.

The authors will find you the best rock bottom, dirt cheap, bargain basement, lowest price possible accommodations and restaurants to match. The accommodations listed in this guide span from under $10 to $25 plus. Where the guide has the "thumbs-up" symbol near the listing it is worth checking it out.

There are restaurants in the guide for $2 (this doesn't include your beer) and these eateries have very good food! The guide was written by six "research-writers" so one geographical area can be better described than another. I found the descriptions of both the accommodations and eateries to be very brief and not as informative as the upscale guide ,"Frommer's" (a very good guide for Mexico - strongly recommended). However, you still get enough information to make a discerning choice.

For those who love "Nightlife" (bars & clubs), the "Let's Go Mexico" guide is the best out today... especially for the young crowd. All of their recommendations, including the bars and clubs, are easy to find on fairly decent maps.

Bottom line: This is guide is especially valuable if you are trying to explore Mexico on your lunch money. Happy Trails. Highly Recommended.

Not Thorough or Up to Date

As a white, early 30's couple who are experienced off-the-beaten-path travelers, we've used Lets Go in the past for travel through Europe and Asia and have been mostly satisfied. However, we were very unsatisfied with the Mexico book.
1) The Mexico book was particularly bad for smaller Mexican cities/towns. The chapter on Oaxaca was lacking in details, specifically regarding transportation options. Even for Mexico City, the number of listings seemed small in comparison to the number of options.
2) We are slightly older travelers (30 years old) and this book is focused on late night parties and bars. While I understand that Lets Go is oriented to younger travelers (post-college), we found the lack of nice bars, authentic cheap food (barely discussed street food), and local activities (not gringo bars or non-tourist circuit things).
3) Hotel descriptions were unfailingly positive. While the hotels we stayed in were sparse, but fine, to say things like 'spotless bathroom' when the bathroom was adequate and not spotless, is far-fetched and misleading.
4) Prices were significantly off - 15-20%. Even if no one from Lets Go travels to Mexico every year, it cannot be difficult to call these places to verify prices, especially when Lets Go lists the telephone number and publishes a new edition every year.
5) we are not fluent, but speak an intermediate level of Spanish. We didn't feel that Lets Go adequately prepared us for the lack of English spoken, especially in non-beach or non-Mexico City areas of the country.

Good for some, perhaps, but not for others

I didn't really gain much insight as to the types of activities I was hoping to explore in Mexico (Chiapas). Granted, there is a good deal of info regarding museums and markets in Let's Go, but not very much regarding ecotour and other outdoor pursuits, which don't get much mention at all in this guide. If you're looking for info regarding hotels and cultural attractions, Let's Go may be a good choice. If you're looking for info regarding ecotourism, outdoor activites, and other such things that may be a little off the beaten path, Rough Guide or Lonely Planet is probably the better buy.
