Crafty Guide to Analyzing Arguments
By Albert Jaeger
A superb addition to the rapidly expanding "informal logic" textbook market. The book tries to familiarize the reader with a (rather original) interpretation of the so-called "Toulmin scheme" for analyzing arguments and combines this approach with a judicious dose of advice on "how to write arguments gracefully," the latter echoing Joseph Williams's well-known textbook (Style: Ten Lessons in Clarity and Grace). I liked in particular the book's easygoing tone (people writing on argumentation often come across as rather highbrow) and the excellent selection of readings. If this kind of stuff interests you, this book, perhaps combined with David Zarefsky's recently released (Teaching Company) course on "Argument: The Study of Effective Reasoning," could put you in the fast lane.

Nudge is about choices—how we make them and how we can make better ones. Drawing on decades of research in the fields of behavioral science and economics, authors Richard H. Thaler and Cass R. Sunstein offer a new perspective on preventing the countless mistakes we make—ill-advised personal investments, consumption of unhealthy foods, neglect of our natural resources—and show us how sensible “choice architecture” can successfully nudge people toward the best decisions. In the tradition of The Tipping Point and Freakonomics, Nudge is straightforward, informative, and entertaining—a must-read for anyone interested in our individual and collective well-being.

Amazon.com Review

Questions for Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein

Amazon.com: What do you mean by "nudge" and why do people sometimes need to be nudged?

Thaler and Sunstein: By a nudge we mean anything that influences our choices. A school cafeteria might try to nudge kids toward good diets by putting the healthiest foods at front. We think that it's time for institutions, including government, to become much more user-friendly by enlisting the science of choice to make life easier for people and by gentling nudging them in directions that will make their lives better.

Amazon.com: What are some of the situations where nudges can make a difference?

Thaler and Sunstein: Well, to name just a few: better investments for everyone, more savings for retirement, less obesity, more charitable giving, a cleaner planet, and an improved educational system. We could easily make people both wealthier and healthier by devising friendlier choice environments, or architectures.

Amazon.com: Can you describe a nudge that is now being used successfully?

Thaler and Sunstein: One example is the Save More Tomorrow program. Firms offer employees who are not saving very much the option of joining a program in which their saving rates are automatically increased whenever the employee gets a raise. This plan has more than tripled saving rates in some firms, and is now offered by thousands of employers.

Amazon.com: What is "choice architecture" and how does it affect the average person's daily life?

Thaler and Sunstein: Choice architecture is the context in which you make your choice. Suppose you go into a cafeteria. What do you see first, the salad bar or the burger and fries stand? Where's the chocolate cake? Where's the fruit? These features influence what you will choose to eat, so the person who decides how to display the food is the choice architect of the cafeteria. All of our choices are similarly influenced by choice architects. The architecture includes rules deciding what happens if you do nothing; what's said and what isn't said; what you see and what you don't. Doctors, employers, credit card companies, banks, and even parents are choice architects.

We show that by carefully designing the choice architecture, we can make dramatic improvements in the decisions people make, without forcing anyone to do anything. For example, we can help people save more and invest better in their retirement plans, make better choices when picking a mortgage, save on their utility bills, and improve the environment simultaneously. Good choice architecture can even improve the process of getting a divorce--or (a happier thought) getting married in the first place!

Amazon.com: You are very adamant about allowing people to have choice, even though they may make bad ones. But if we know what's best for people, why just nudge? Why not push and shove?

Thaler and Sunstein: Those who are in position to shape our decisions can overreach or make mistakes, and freedom of choice is a safeguard to that. One of our goals in writing this book is to show that it is possible to help people make better choices and retain or even expand freedom. If people have their own ideas about what to eat and drink, and how to invest their money, they should be allowed to do so.

Amazon.com: You point out that most people spend more time picking out a new TV or audio device than they do choosing their health plan or retirement investment strategy? Why do most people go into what you describe as "auto-pilot mode" even when it comes to making important long-term decisions?

Thaler and Sunstein: There are three factors at work. First, people procrastinate, especially when a decision is hard. And having too many choices can create an information overload. Research shows that in many situations people will just delay making a choice altogether if they can (say by not joining their 401(k) plan), or will just take the easy way out by selecting the default option, or the one that is being suggested by a pushy salesman.

Second, our world has gotten a lot more complicated. Thirty years ago most mortgages were of the 30-year fixed-rate variety making them easy to compare. Now mortgages come in dozens of varieties, and even finance professors can have trouble figuring out which one is best. Since the cost of figuring out which one is best is so hard, an unscrupulous mortgage broker can easily push unsophisticated borrowers into taking a bad deal.

Third, although one might think that high stakes would make people pay more attention, instead it can just make people tense. In such situations some people react by curling into a ball and thinking, well, err, I'll do something else instead, like stare at the television or think about baseball. So, much of our lives is lived on auto-pilot, just because weighing complicated decisions is not so easy, and sometimes not so fun. Nudges can help ensure that even when we're on auto-pilot, or unwilling to make a hard choice, the deck is stacked in our favor.

Amazon.com: Are we humans just poorly adapted for making sound judgments in an increasingly fast-paced and complex world? What can we do to position ourselves better?

Thaler and Sunstein: The human brain is amazing, but it evolved for specific purposes, such as avoiding predators and finding food. Those purposes do not include choosing good credit card plans, reducing harmful pollution, avoiding fatty foods, and planning for a decade or so from now. Fortunately, a few nudges can help a lot. A few small hints: Sign up for automatic payment plans so you don’t pay late fees. Stop using your credit cards until you can pay them off on time every month. Make sure you're enrolled in a 401(k) plan. A final hint: Read Nudge.

Review
"How often do you read a book that is both important and amusing, both practical and deep? This gem of a book presents the best idea that has come out of behavioral economics. It is a must-read for anyone who wants to see both our minds and our society working better. It will improve your decisions and it will make the world a better place."-Daniel Kahneman, Princeton University, Nobel Laureate in Economics (Daniel Kahneman )

"In this utterly brilliant book, Thaler and Sunstein teach us how to steer people toward better health, sounder investments, and cleaner environments without depriving them of their inalienable right to make a mess of things if they want to. The inventor of behavioral economics and one of the nation''s best legal minds have produced the manifesto for a revolution in practice and policy. Nudge won''t nudge you-it will knock you off your feet."-Daniel Gilbert, professor of psychology, Harvard University, Author of Stumbling on Happiness (Daniel Gilbert )

"This is an engaging, informative, and thoroughly delightful book. Thaler and Sunstein provide important lessons for structuring social policies so that people still have complete choice over their own actions, but are gently nudged to do what is in their own best interests. Well done."-Don Norman, Northwestern University, Author of The Design of Everyday Things and The Design of Future Things (Don Norman )

"This book is terrific. It will change the way you think, not only about the world around you and some of its bigger problems, but also about yourself."-Michael Lewis, author of The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game and Liar''s Poker (Michael Lewis )

"Two University of Chicago professors sketch a new approach to public policy that takes into account the odd realities of human behavior, like the deep and unthinking tendency to conform. Even in areas-like energy consumption-where conformity is irrelevant. Thaler has documented the ways people act illogically."-Barbara Kiviat, Time (Barbara Kiviat Time )

"Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein''s Nudge is a wonderful book: more fun than any important book has a right to be-and yet it is truly both."-Roger Lowenstein, author of When Genius Failed (Roger Lowenstein )

"A manifesto for using the recent behavioral research to help people, as well as government agencies, companies and charities, make better decisions."-David Leonhardt, The New York Times Magazine (David Leonhardt The New York Times Magazine )

"I love this book. It is one of the few books I''ve read recently that fundamentally changes the way I think about the world. Just as surprising, it is fun to read, drawing on examples as far afield as urinals, 401(k) plans, organ donations, and marriage. Academics aren''t supposed to be able to write this well."-Steven Levitt, Alvin Baum Professor of Economics, University of Chicago Graduate School of Business and co-author of Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything (Steven Levitt )

Review
"Fundamentally changes the way I think about the world. . . . Academics aren't supposed to be able to write this well." —Steven Levitt, co-author of Freakonomics

"[An] utterly brilliant book. . . . Nudge won't nudge you-it will knock you off your feet." —Daniel Gilbert, author of Stumbling on Happiness

"Nudge is as important a book as any I've read in perhaps twenty years. It is a book that people interested in any aspect of public policy should read. It is a book that people interested in politics should read. It is a book that people interested in ideas about human freedom should read. It is a book that people interested in promoting human welfare should read. If you're not interested in any of these topics, you can read something else." —Barry Schwartz, The American Prospect

"This book is terrific. It will change the way you think, not only about the world around you and some of its bigger problems, but also about yourself." —Michael Lewis, author of Moneyball

From the Author

A conversation with Richard Thaler & Cass Sunstein

Q: What do you mean by "nudge" and why do people sometimes need to be nudged?

A: By a nudge we mean anything that influences our choices. A school cafeteria might try to nudge kids toward good diets by putting the healthiest foods at front. We think that it's time for institutions, including government, to become much more user-friendly by enlisting the science of choice to make life easier for people and by gentling nudging them in directions that will make their lives better.

Q: You discuss tricks our minds play on us, and biases we have. What are some of those?

A: As with visual or optical illusions, our minds can play tricks on us. For example, we are very sensitive to the way choices are described or "framed." A medical treatment can be made more or less attractive depending on whether the outcomes are described in terms of the chances of survival or the chances of death, even though these are, of course, equivalent.

Q: What are some of the situations where nudges can make a difference?

A: Well, to name just a few: better investments for everyone, more savings for retirement, less obesity, more charitable giving, a cleaner planet, and an improved educational system. We could easily make people both wealthier and healthier by devising friendlier choice environments, or architectures.

Q: Can you describe a nudge that is now being used successfully?

A: One example is the Save More Tomorrow program.  Firms offer employees who are not saving very much the option of joining a program in which their saving rates are automatically increased whenever the employee gets a raise. This plan has more than tripled saving rates in some firms, and is now offered by thousands of employers.

Q: You are very adamant about allowing people to have choice, even though they may make bad ones. But if we know what's best for people, why just nudge? Why not push and shove?

A: Those who are in position to shape our decisions can overreach or make mistakes, and freedom of choice is a safeguard to that. One of our goals in writing this book is to show that it is possible to help people make better choices and retain or even expand freedom. If people have their own ideas about what to eat and drink, and how to invest their money, they should be allowed to do so.

Libertarian paternalism
By Amazon Customer
When I first realized that the book was centered around the idea of "libertarian paternalism" I about laughed my butt off. How in the world could two antithetical ideologies work in harmony become a congruent ideology? I didn't think that it could, but the authors did a great job. I agree with most everything they authors had to say but wished they had fleshed out about some topics more, namely school choice. Anyways his was a very interesting read and deserves 5 stars

A little of everything, and therefore unfortunately not much of anything
By Meadowbank
This book covers a lot of ground, and none of it is covered with any rigour or depth.

There are occasional interesting pieces of insight - for example, if you want people to reduce their energy usage, it may be enough to tell above-average users that they are in that category - below-average users, not so much, they may then use more energy - but you can counter this by a nice smiley emoticon next to where that fact is displayed (implying they're doing a great thing by using less energy) and their usage will stay low.

The problem is, to gain these nice pieces of insight, I had to dig through much much more content that was not covered well.

Here are some of the the things you'll find in this book

- A superficial review of psychology research concerning a few factors on how people make choices (For example, too many choices lead to overwhelm and bad decisions. Another example - people can be influenced to make a bad decision if others around them are making bad decisions).
- A explanation of how people can be helped to make good choices, for example with food, by where food is placed on store shelves (e.g. at eye level vs not).
- Many many pages of excruciating detail on why choices of medical insurance plans can be a complex and painful process. Ditto for how the complexity of investing can lead to bad investment choices. None of this is original.
- A fairly basic solution proposed to complexity of choices - regulations to require providers to provide information on the implications of their choices - for example, lenders should provide documentation of the implications of a given choice of loan - what you'd end up paying over time (not just at the time of initial "special deals") and what the worst case scenario would imply in terms of costs for you. This information, the authors advise, should not be buried in the fine print. Very very obvious stuff.
- A chapter on making organ donation to be opt-out instead of opt-in. One of the better chapters, with some evidence given of it having worked in some countries. But could have been dealt with in a few paragraphs, did not need to be stretched to a chapter (admittedly a short chapter).
- Some attempts at philosophical argument for why governments should be allowed to "nudge" people to better choices, but not done to any depth or rigour.
- Several side comments that did not provide any new insights - for example, that the principle of what actions are being taken by those in authority should be transparent might have prevented the atrocities at Abu Ghraib. Again, nothing original here.
- Several trite pieces of advice about how publicising a commitment you've made (e.g. to lose weight) and setting up disincentives for failure (e.g. a certain amount of money to be donated to a cause you disapprove of) can help you achieve the goal. Again, nothing new here.
- A more reasonable chapter on privatizing marriage - the goal being to allow religious groups to endorse marriages based on their convictions, but for all partnerships to be granted equal legal status. Not really related to the concept of nudging though, and drawn out and padded with sociological thoughts on what function marriage has historically served, which does not seem to be the authors' field of expertise.
- Random pieces of advice such as permitting motorcycle riders to not wear helmets if they take extra training and show evidence of medical insurance. If I could be sure that they are also paying higher insurance premiums I might not be too annoyed at that one, but the authors don't venture into this area of discussion so again I felt their treatment of this topic was incomplete.
- A recommendation that the Social Security Administration assist those claiming benefits by making more clear at what age you should start collecting the benefits if you want to obtain the maximum amount of money by it (allowing for things like, maybe I'm ok with less money if I want it sooner). Having a payer assist a payee in taking maximum advantage is nice and altruistic, good luck with getting that happening.

Overall it felt like the authors had a collection of unrelated instances of advice that they were trying to force to fit the concept of a "nudge".

If you are interested in this kind of content from a psychology viewpoint, read Freakonomics (Dubner and Levitt), Predictably Irrational (Ariely), Influence (Cialdini), Tipping Point (Gladwell). For the investment advice and bits of self-help associated with that, David Bach does a better job in his various books.

a good introduction: practical, useful.
By Tammy Rubicat
As an introduction to the Mediterranean Diet, this book provides a great breakdown of the ins and outs of the healthy, diverse approach to the foods and lifestyle associated with a Mediterranean way of cooking and eating. I enjoyed the “Ten steps for success” and other handy explanations of how to fully incorporate the diet into your daily life. What I didn’t see, however, was a particularly passionate approach to the way of eating and cooking that usually defines Mediterranean cooking.

This book is a planning guide, basically – it’s a practical approach to the how and why of the diet, but is not going to hold the attention of people (like me) who like the well-rounded, passionate narrative of lifestyles associated with healthy living. But that’s not for everyone, so the meal plans and guides are a perfect introduction. There are some daily tips alongside the menus that offer some insight into how to better internalize the benefits of the diet: “Don’t be afraid to use leftovers. Slice up the lamb from dinner on Day One to use in your lettuce wraps on Day Three.
“ The Plan-Ahead tips are great, too. And the recipes are varied and wonderful (maple-lime salmon? Oh, yum).

In all, a great book. More for straightforward, practical-minded people, but easy to follow and features some wonderful tips and recipes.

I have 100+ cookbooks and went to culinary school. I love this book. Simple Simple Simple. I sometimes modify with an ingredient or two based on what I have on hand, but I love the simplicity and great "back to the basics" message.

Shopping list and meal plans are helpful
By Suzanne M.
Except for the lamb I'd be happy with all of the over 100 recipes in this book. Although it doesn't focus on calorie counting, it does encourage eating in moderation. The Mediterranean diet adheres to the American Heart Association's guidelines for consuming monounsaturated fats instead of the typical high saturated fats found in American diets. There are many studies sited in the book and I won't bore you with that, but evidence is clear this is a delicious, heart healthy and cancer inhibiting diet rich in olive oil, lean meats, fish, veggies, fruits and even red wine with dinner. There is a 4 week meal plan and a shopping list that makes it very easy to shop for what you need. Try the Baked Eggs with Goat Cheese and the Spiced Sweet Potato Pancakes.

The story, the art, and the characters are all great! But...
By Joseph Martin
At long last we've made it past the introductions, the girls all have a foothold in the story, and the mystery of the 'D' character has been put to rest. You'd think everything would be right as rain, but there's still one last issue. One little tiny problem. Who the heck is Kimihito going to marry!? Because we all know there's no possible way he'll end up with a harem end. *wink* Welcome to volume eight, which is all about introducing a bunch of new characters and helping their problems. From a Yuki-Onna running an Onsen to a Nine-tailed Fox at a shrine, it seems as though Kimihito is never going to get a chance to rest.

That's the good. The story. The art. The characters. But my friends, Seven Seas has really done it this time. It's almost as if they read my reviews and go "Oh, you though that was bad? How about this!" Their translation has degraded to including the most "American" of phrases, and references to things that didn't even exist when this volume was being made! They are really trying their darndest to ruin this series, and it shows. I grid my teeth while reading what they have done, and feel saddened by the fact that this format is the only way some readers are experiencing this series.

A bit of overkill, but generally the vacation trip is great fun
By Robert Fisher
Monster Musume is my favorite of ongoing manga series; I've used a vintage television analogy in describing it to friends, saying it is like "Three's Company" crossed with "The Munsters". I was worried that this was going to be the last volume, but it seems that there will be a Volume 9 later this year. As for what I thought of this volume? At the conclusion of Volume 7, Ms. Smith sent the gang on a vacation, so I imagine many American fans exclaimed "Road trip!" (Slight spoiler: no one asks "Are we there yet?"). They go to a hot spring resort run by a snow spirit and encounter a shrine with a shapeshifter. They end up at a farm staffed by a female minotaur and some sheep women, providing awkward situations for Kimihito. On the way home, they find themselves meeting two liminals working with a private security service who seem to have been trained by Barney Fife (Okay, maybe I am overdoing it on old TV analogies). It was great to see a new volume of the series and there were cameos by Doppel and Lilith, two characters I like. Kimihito and the ladies got into some fun adventures and there were a lot of new monster girls. However, by way of criticism, there was a slight feeling of overkill; Okayado seemed to be doing just a bit too much. Still, this is not enough to change my above mentioned opinion of the series and it looks like Volume 9 will have a promising story featuring Mero.

An incomplete volume
By Greg Freeman
This book offers just enough information to cripple a student. Descriptions of lattice structures contained scant information on any structure other than Face-Centered Cubic structures or Base-Centered Cubic structures. The book did not provide adequate reasoning behind the formation of Diamond centered cubic structures, of importance when dealing with ceramic materials. Ambiguous explanation of the Hexagonal close packed structure lead to difficulty understanding what effects stucture causes.

I viewed a previous edition of this textbook, under a different author, and found diagrams showing full crystal structures instead of single unit cells. I should find the diagrams I need for this in my materials book, I do not understand why they were not included.

The examples used seem silly, such as asking the reader what materials should be used on the space shuttle. At the point in the book the questions are asked, one can only assume the reader has no idea unless they watched a space shuttle documentary or read about the subject themselves. They will be able to provide requirements of the materials, but spitting out names at the reader without delving into the why of the materials selection does the reader great harm. The book does not connect neccessary pieces, nor provide a "big picture" view of some important subjects in the text. Emphasis is on memorization, not on true understanding.

When Spellcheck Fails
By Winkler
Enjoy the speling errors and, gramatical misstakes on allmost evry, pages. One would suppose after four editions all such errors would have been annihilated. Maybe the mistakes are meant to maintain the reader's vigilance. Perhaps the typos exist so that one day edition 6 might also.
It is worth noting, for the reader's insight, that in this edition the author(s) employ the use--or perhaps we should say the "overuse"--of the English language to generate many sentences for the purpose of yielding simple concepts to the reader, though certainly a few words would suffice. The book is, in a word, wordy.
Perhaps this is enough to warrant a grade of one star. In the book's defense, however, the pictures are quite nice... when they happen to be accurate. After noticing glaring truth deficiencies in a few graphs and formulas it becomes difficult to simply accept all of the quite nice pictures as definitive law, though they are certainly enjoyable for aesthetic purposes.
To summarize, the book is not recommended for purchasing purposes unless unavoidable. Though the text possesses some merit in its ability to sharpen one's editing skills, that is no reason to spend what textbooks cost.

An awful text book
By A Customer
I just completed a course in materials science using the 4th edition and have been appalled by the poor quality of the book (spiffy cover artwork aside).
The book is full of generalizations that impart no significant understanding of the topics treated. Commonly, the book will simply assert that X causes Y without any physical justification as to WHY. Illustratively, when the book touches upon atomic structure, it uses a figure depicting the Bohr model of the atom without any reference to this being a simplification, nor any reference to the "actual" character of atomic orbitals.
Additionally, the book is rife with poorly worded problems which are accompanied by answers that seeminly have no correspondence to their respective problems. I did not do a single problem set from the book without finding at least one problem where the answer was just plain wrong. A particularly amusing instance was the assignment of units of area to a dimensionless answer (and NO, the quantity wasn't right, either).
STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS BOOK.

Digital Apollo: Human and Machine in Spaceflight, by David A. Mindell

As Apollo 11's Lunar Module descended toward the moon under automatic control, a program alarm in the guidance computer's software nearly caused a mission abort. Neil Armstrong responded by switching off the automatic mode and taking direct control. He stopped monitoring the computer and began flying the spacecraft, relying on skill to land it and earning praise for a triumph of human over machine. In Digital Apollo, engineer-historian David Mindell takes this famous moment as a starting point for an exploration of the relationship between humans and computers in the Apollo program. In each of the six Apollo landings, the astronaut in command seized control from the computer and landed with his hand on the stick. Mindell recounts the story of astronauts' desire to control their spacecraft in parallel with the history of the Apollo Guidance Computer. From the early days of aviation through the birth of spaceflight, test pilots and astronauts sought to be more than "spam in a can" despite the automatic controls, digital computers, and software developed by engineers.

Digital Apollo examines the design and execution of each of the six Apollo moon landings, drawing on transcripts and data telemetry from the flights, astronaut interviews, and NASA's extensive archives. Mindell's exploration of how human pilots and automated systems worked together to achieve the ultimate in flight -- a lunar landing -- traces and reframes the debate over the future of humans and automation in space. The results have implications for any venture in which human roles seem threatened by automated systems, whether it is the work at our desktops or the future of exploration.

Review

[A] wealth of research that even the most informed space fans can enjoy. Mindell avoids the temptation to glorify the space program, instead dealing with the nitty gritty logistics involved in getting a man to the moon. Digital Apollo succeeds in providing an inside track to one of the most difficult technological challenges of the 20th century.

(James Thorne coolhunting.com)

Mindell joyfully plumbs the deep history of Apollo's decade-long clash between the MIT eggheads who built the computers and the thrill-jockey military test pilots who used them.

(IEEE Spectrum)

Digital Apollo is an excellent and unique historical account of the lengthy, and often pitched struggle of designers, engineers, and pilots to successfully integrate man and complex computer systems for the Apollo lunar landings. It brings back fond memories.

(Edgar Mitchell, Sc.D.; Captain, USN (retired) Lunar Module Pilot, Apollo 14)

Mindell's well-written book deals with a terribly important and often overlooked aspect of space age technology. Commentators often present space exploration in the form of a two-sided debate, where advocates of robotics confront advocates of human flight. As Mindell adroitly demonstrates, the engineers who designed the spacecraft that actually flew to the Moon created by necessity a third position, fashioning a practical solution that stood in between the astronaut as automaton and the astronaut as a pilot fully in control. This is a 'must read' book for anyone seriously interested in understanding how space flight really works.

(Howard E. McCurdy, author of Faster, Better, Cheaper)

David Mindell's very important and accessible book precisely dissects Apollo history, proving Apollo a harbinger of our current digital era.

(Charles Simonyi, President and CEO, Intentional Software, and Participant, Soyuz TMA-10 Mission to the International Space Station, April 2007)

Digital Apollo takes the reader on a wild ride following the impact of the increasingly complex world of data processing, control, and display on space flight. The book traces the evolution of man's role aboard high speed aircraft, the hybrid X-15, and ultimately space flight, and the lunar landing. This book is fascinating history and an important resource for future space explorers.

(Robert C. Seamans, Jr., Former Deputy Administrator, NASA)

The book is a refreshing reminder that it is still possible to uncover new stories about the early years of the American space program.

Much More Than the Title Implies
By Terry Sunday
You might think a book entitled "Digital Apollo" would be about the development, programming and operation of the digital computers in the Apollo Command (CM) and Lunar (LM) Modules. You would be partially right. About half of Dr. David Mindell's superb volume covers those subjects, very readably and in great detail. But the book's scope is far broader than that. It is really nothing less than a comprehensive examination of the relationships between humans and machines from the earliest days of aviation, through the X-15, Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and Space Shuttle eras, and into the future of spaceflight.

It's a fascinating story that has not, to my knowledge, previously been told in any depth. The evolution of the Apollo computer hardware and software occurred in parallel with the evolution of the attitudes of steely eyed NASA astronauts, who fought hard to avoid relinquishing any control to machines. All the early astronauts were test pilots--their hard-won experiences with primitive vacuum-tube systems in aircraft had convinced them that "electronics always fail." Thus they opposed NASA's decision, mandated by the complexity of lunar missions, to depend largely on new-fangled transistorized digital computers to help them fly the Apollo spacecraft. At one time, in those days before "fly-by-wire" control systems, some Apollo astronauts wanted actual cables connecting a conventional aircraft-type stick with the CM's attitude control rocket motors. That didn't happen. They feared that computer failures would jeopardize their missions and perhaps cost them their lives. That also didn't happen. To find out what DID happen, there's no better source than "Digital Apollo."

Dr. Mindell says his book "...tells the story of the relationship between human and machine in the Apollo project and how that relationship shaped the experience and the technology of flying to the moon. It is a story of human pilots, of automated systems, and of the two working together to achieve the ultimate in flight. It is also a story of public imagery, professional identities and social relationships among engineers, pilots, flight controllers and many others, each with their own visions of spaceflight." That's a good summary, but I'd like to add to it. First, words like "social relationships" and "working together" and "visions" should not deter technophiles from reading "Digital Apollo." Those subjects are all in there, but much of the book is at the down-and-dirty technical level of bits and bytes and magnetic core memories and DSKYs and other esoterica. Dr. Mindell superbly integrates the human and computer stories in a way that almost anyone should find interesting. Second, "Digital Apollo" is one of the best-written spaceflight books I've read in years. Its tone is brisk and conversational, but the information it contains is deep, broad and very well-explained. You don't have to be a space cadet to enjoy it. It is also exceptionally accurate. I came across only a few minor errors in the parts of the story that I know, such as calling a metal alloy used in the X-15 "Iconel-X" rather than "Inconel-X" (the alloy and the name came from the International Nickel Company, hence "Inco").

"Digital Apollo" fills a niche in the history of technology and spaceflight in a most outstanding way. It reminds me a little of Tracy Kidder's "The Soul of A New Machine," and that is high praise indeed. Even if you think you know Apollo, you should read it. You're sure to learn a lot, and be entertained in the process. I recommend it most highly.

A Superior Account Of The Challenges Of The Man-Machine Interface In Apollo
By Robert I. Hedges
In "Digital Apollo" David Mindell has created a thoughtful and readable account of the design of the Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC), the software that allowed it to succeed, the history of its use, and the bigger picture issues of human factors and automation interface issues in complex systems in general. While I differ with him on some of his perspectives (I am a pilot, and tend to side with the "man in the loop" opinions held by the astronauts, most eloquently voiced by Neil Armstrong and Dave Scott), I found the entire book engrossing and his approach to complex human factors, ergonomic, and automation issues to be extraordinarily useful, especially to professionals in the field.

The book traces the history of the AGC, discusses its growth and capabilities, and its real world use. I was especially pleased with chapters nine and ten which dealt in detail with each of the six landings, differences between the landings, and differing attitudes held by the various astronauts about the computer and its functionality. I was pleased with the detailed coverage that Apollo 12 got, and the explanations of the increasing complexity of the "J missions" which took heavier LMs into much more difficult terrain much more steeply. Mindell gives the best explanation I have yet read (p. 205) of the use of the Landing Point Designator (LPD), and computer incorporation of landing radar returns and resulting Delta H data into final altitude solutions for the crew. As an aside, don't stop reading until the very end: the very last page (p. 361) contans an excellent explanation of the extremely well rendered cover illustration depicting the view from Armstrong's window at about 520 feet above the lurain.

The book is, like any endeavor of this scope, not perfect, with an occasional error or typo: most seem to be due to spell check artifacts not recognizing unusual word use. (The most obvious example is the discussion of the Apollo 1201 and 1202 program alarms on p. 222 which he refers to as "executive overload" instead of "executive overflow" alarms, even though he subsequently used the word overflow correctly in reference to these same events. Amusingly enough, the quote about the alarms from Norman Mailer doesn't really make sense if you read the word as "overload.") This is, of course, nitpicking, and I absolutely don't intend to take away from a brilliant career accomplishment.

The ideal reader for this book will care passionately about manned space flight, and will find Apollo especially worthy of in-depth study. The book does not require any previous knowledge of spaceflight, human factors, computer interface issues, or aviation, but will be slower going for someone with no background in those areas (though still worthwhile). It is not a technical book in the sense that only engineers, programmers, astronauts, or pilots can glean useful information from it, but it does touch on a variety of complex subjects. Fortunately Mindell is more than up to the task and makes learning about this fascinating subject highly rewarding. I recommend this book very highly.

This Book Provides the Detailed "Why" behind the Apollo System's Human/Computer Design - not just the "How".
By Stewart Teaze - Aerospace Systems Engineer
This book is too good to race through... I've been reading this book slowly over the last two months, and the technical content and details of the Apollo Program (with focus on the man and machine interactions) are outstanding.

I work on training flight simulators, and the background sections on the X-15 Program (and its simulators), which formed a basis for the Apollo mission planning, and human(pilot)-machine interface design, were especially interesting.

All throughout the book, the author provides the reasons WHY things were done the way they were, not just HOW they were done (which has been the case in all the other Apollo-related books I've read previously).

Additionally, significantly detailed explanations of all stages of the Apollo Guidance Computer(AGC) hardware and software development process are provided. I was especially impressed with the "real explanation" of the root cause of the famous 1201/1202 program alarms, which came close to causing Neal Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to abort the Apollo 11 (first moon) landing due to (among other things) pilot work overload. The fact is that the software did not have to change for Apollo 12 to deal with the root cause of the alarms... it was the procedures that had to change to deal with the root cause of the alarms, which was due to overloading of the LM AGC, due to lack of a full understanding of the interaction of the rendezvous RADAR subsytem (which Aldrin had insisted be turned on early "just in case" of an abort, so that the pilots wouldn't have to remember to turn it on if there was an abort), with various other subsystems during the critical final decent stage of the mission - which, all combined, caused the AGC to become "overloaded" and cause the 1201 & 1202 program alarms during the most critical phase of the Apollo 11 mission.
