Sunday School Bible

This book was originally printed as Sunday school material for children called "Sunday Pix," small booklets which would contain a short story from the Bible, 3-4 pages long, as well as other inspirational stories. In 1973, these were collected as 6 black-and-white paperback books like this Creation: The Picture Bible for All Ages (Volume 1, Genesis 1 to Exodus 19), and later in 1978 into one volume. I think this larger book has been pruned down a little, and may be missing some entire stories such as Jonah. (Is Job missing as well?)
The artwork is really quite well done. Perhaps not up to modern standards, but good for its day - better than a lot of what Marvel and DC were putting out in those days. I've heard that some effort went into making clothes, architecture, and so forth look like what actually existed in those days. It may be true, I don't know, but I suspect that most people wore brown clothing in those days, rather than the bright colors depicted in this book.
Considering that the book is aimed at children, it's practically G-rated. The only blood I can remember is in Ahab's chariot. In the story of Sodom (the city of Gomorrah isn't mentioned), it's not clear what the mob wants to do with the angels. There are various other inaccuracies as well, as the author inserts her own explanations and interpretations into it, which admittedly help the stories make more sense.. Most of the dialogue (including thought bubbles) is invented.
As these are Bible stories, books such as Psalms, Proverbs, Lamentation, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon (among others) aren't covered. The 12 minor prophets are covered briefly over three pages.
There have been a number of editions of this hardback. Mine is dated 1998, with the "blue edged" cover. This contains 25 "Did You Know?" pages which help to clarify the text, as well as three maps. Other reviewers say their children read their copies so much, the covers fell off, so it may not be very durable. Due to a printing error, my particular copy is missing pages 465-480 and in place of them, there are duplicate pages 321-336, upside-down. On the other hand, my copy has better quality color than some of the other reviewers are complaining about.
Although I've been critical, as long as children are told that this isn't "exactly" a Bible, it's not a bad book.

I am a grown woman and I LOVE THIS BOOK

I did not have this book as a child when I was growing up, but somehow my mom found one at a yard sale when I was in college and I happened onto it. I fell in love with it. It's a comic book, and I don't even like comic books, but I love having the Bible stories illustrated this way. It brings them to life!
I read my Bible and really, really love it, but seeing it with pictures also brings more of my senses into the process. I was just reading about the march around Jericho and I loved looking at the horns the priests were carrying. It just is easier to assimilate all the details of the story.
I read the reviewer who did not like the Sodom story and I do think that needs to be watered down for children, although probably in a different way. But I don't expect it to be perfect---I use it as an adjunct to my Bible reading.
I came home from school one weekend (this was years ago) when I was in college and my Picture Bible book was gone! My mom said she had given it to a child of one of her friends who stopped by. That Bible was in my room and I loved it! I thought when I got so upset she would get me another one. Wrong, but I really thought she would and eventually I forgot about it.
Then somehow I remembered all this last weekend when I was out with a friend and I came home and bought it.
I LOVE it ALL OVER AGAIN---I have it sitting by my chair in the den and when a commercial comes on, I mute it and read a story.
It's worth every single cent. The book is large and it is amazing how much it covers. Well, you can see from the five star reviews that it's a GREAT book!

This Bible will hold a child's interest.

Reading the Picture Bible is a great and quick way to learn Bible history in chronological order. The illustrations are great,,,very detailed. The stories are broken up into "chapters" of 3-4 pages with each chapter ending in a cliffhanger. The next chapter always begins with a short recap of what just happened in the previous chapter. The whole book is written and illustrated similar to comic books with what the characters are saying enclosed in bubbles. I would say its appropriate for ages 8-12. I am currently reading it with a 12 year old girl. She gives no indication that she considers herself too old for it....maybe because the illustrations are in no way childish but meant to appeal to older children.
The only thing I am disappointed about is the fact that they skip several great stories. Two that I can think of offhand are:
1) Solomon displays his wisdom when he has to decide which woman a baby belongs to. He proclaims he will cut the baby in half and give half to each woman. The real mother protests and says to give the baby to the other woman. The false mother (jealous that her real baby died) says, "Yes! Yes! That is a good idea. Solomon says to give the baby to the real mother.
2) The story of the woman in the New Testament with the issue of blood who thought "If only I could touch the hem of his garment, I will be healed."
I am still giving it a 5 because there aren't any other illustrated Bibles on the market to compare. If I could give it a percentage rating, I'd give it 95% which is still an A+!
