I am surprised by the number of negative reviews for what I consider to be a nicely written, well thought out, and logically presented introductory course on mathematical statistics. Yes, a working knowledge of elementary calculus is a prerequisite. But the mathematics invoked in the exposition of concepts and theorems are kept as simple as possible while maintaining that modest level of rigor appropriate for a introductory exposition. If you do not have the minimal mathematical prerequisites (such as freshman calculus), blame your instructor or your school for selecting an inappropriate text. But don't blame the authors! I thought the examples and problems were appropriate in their level of difficulty (mostly not so hard) and the relation to the material just covered. There are plenty of poorly written, impossibly dry, inpenetrable texts on statistics out there - this is not one of them. In addition, the book is attractively packaged, the paper quality is excellent, the visuals are informative and clearly presented - that also should not be taken for granted. Lastly the authors have a wicked entertaining sense of humor that spice the presentation throughout. I consider this book to be a welcome addition to the set of modern textbooks available to the curious serious student of probability and statistics.

This textbook is SO confusing and virtually useless. The examples in the chapters are of little help when it comes time to do assigned problems. This book writes with an expectation that all students can just look at a problem and know the answer almost instantaneously. If you are not intuitive with math this book will NOT be your friend. I do not intend to keep this one around.

I have just completed another class where the second half of the text was used for the the course. I have painstakingly tried to read this book hoping to better understand.
There are some subjects the book explains fine.
However there are a large amount of subjects that the book actually seems to move too quickly through. Skipping parts to their examples, skipping explanations at times and failing to mention that their examples may only pertain to a very particular kind of problem.
The authors also have written the methods to doing certain types of problems in ways that almost make no sense, partially due to poor use of symbols within the equations. I used this book to try and do my homework and I would use the examples as a guide, it proved to be a mistake, those problems I often had to do over again after talking with my instructor.
If you have no choice but to use this textbook I recommend finding some supplemental materials when a topic seems to not make much sense that might help you understand a little better. Get a book on probability and one on statistics and definitely do not hesitate to speak to your instructors if things get confusing because this textbook just is not good enough on its own for comfortable understanding of probability and statistical theory methods.
