Great for Study

This volume has a ton of useful information. We are studying Matthew in our Sunday School class. Just about every question we come up with is covered in this book -- competently and clearly. Some questions are unanswered by the various study bibles we have (NIV, Life Application, New Geneva, Scofield, etc.) or they might have a sentence or two. However, when I look at this volume by Hendricksen, there are often three or four pages of information! Sure, I wish there had been more information about the missing lineage in the genealogy section, but few people would even know to check it. Otherwise, a great deal of information is provided in a nice format.

Hendriksen on Matthew

Hendriksen, in my opinion, offers the best of several perspectives in his New Testament Commentaries.
If you are looking for pastoral insights you will benefit from Hendriksen's years as a pastor. His years as a college professor gave him great insight into effective methods of teaching.
His insights into the original languages are tremendous, and he is ingenious at putting hard-to-teach subject matter into understandable terms.
Hendriksen gives his own translation of the Greek. I especially apprecite how he differentiates between singular and plural pronouns in doing so.
For scholarship, personal Bible study, sermon thoughts and astute commentary, I heartily recommend this book.

Top-notch commentary

William Hendriksen's commentary on Matthew is one of the best, if not the best, commentary on the First Gospel available on the market today. It is detailed and scholarly (its text runs for approximately 1,000 pages), while at the same time it is highly accessible to the layperson. Hendriksen does not presuppose familiarity with NT Greek or with issues of interpretation. Rather, he explains the text in language that most anyone can understand. More technical points (as well as references to other commentators and interpreters) are found in footnotes, which thereby can easily be skipped by the person looking to gain an overview of the passage (although for the serious student these passages are a treasure trove of information). When I was teaching a Bible study on Matthew some years ago I used this commentary more than any other.
In addition to this being a commentary on Matthew, the first 76 pages of this commentary provide an introduction to the Synoptic Gospels as a whole. In this introduction Hendriksen discusses not just the Synoptic Problem (i.e., the issue of order in which they Synoptics were written, interdependency, etc.), but he also looks at the form criticism of R. Bultmann and others and offers a helpful critique of this approach.
Hendriksen provides his own translation of the Greek text of Matthew. On the whole, this appears to be an excellent translation. I was especially happy to see that in what is the most controversial translation issue in Matthew (11:12) he translates the main verb of that sentence "biazetai" as a middle rather than a passive, and in a footnote gives an extremely lucid explanation of why this translation (which puts a positive spin on what Jesus is saying) is to be preferred. This is just one example of the excellent scholarship found in this commentary.
